Big Waves!

Sarah Amery says, "I have recently finished a massive 4 x 4.5 foot canvas, biggest by far ever attempted! ... I used decorating brushes for the bigger areas and even decorating paint!! Fun to do, highly recommend having a go at something big!!!"

 

Tiger

This is a new subject for Sarah Amery as she explains. "A recent painting for my son who requested a tiger. Really enjoyed painting the water, in fact ended up making it up as it’s nothing like the photo! Used some gold paint on the water to help it shine. A subject I would never have attempted if I hadn’t been asked to!"

Sea Symphony

Sarah Amery has shared another three paintings she has done recently, all in acrylic on canvas.

"The first", she says, "is an attempt to paint myself (I usually avoid painting people!) playing viola, which I get a lot of pleasure from. This viola is a very special instrument as my father made it for me! I really wanted the viola to be the main subject, I chose a lot of greens to help the viola stand out and it’s a peaceful calm colour, playing makes me relax!"

"The other two are pretty much made up from lots of photos of the sea, just miss it so much and hoping to go to Cornwall in a few weeks."

Tammie Norrie

"Look, look, a muffin" was the excited reaction of a five year old when he thought he had spotted a puffin shortly after arriving in Shetland. He soon learnt that locally they were called "Tammie Norries". If you want to read more about them try this Wikipedia entry.

Sarah Amery went to the other extreme of the UK. As she says, "A puffin I met whilst having a holiday on the Scilly Isles many years ago. Was having a sort out and found the photo and decided to paint it! My favourite birds!!"

Two paintings by Sarah Amery. "The sea painting is in Acrylic and is very large, A1 size, the biggest I have ever attempted! The sunflower (much smaller)has colourful beads in the middle to
make it 3D, it is also in acrylic. I used metallic paint for the background."

Here are two acrylic paintings by Sarah Amery. She wrote, “The one on the back of a violin (my father makes violins and this back wasn’t going to be used to complete a violin) I thought I would have fun with! I painted Dartington Hall in Devon for my father as this is a special place for him.

The one of the sea is from a photo of Lanzarote from last year, I wanted to recreate the feeling I had when I stood on the beach. Happy memories!”

Featured in Leisure Painter

Leisure Painter has a  report from Ledbury Art Society on page 62 of its September issue and features Sarah Amery's painting of the Malvern Hills.

This is the image used for the posters advertising our exhibition on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September - 10am to 4:30pm on both days. The exhibition in the Burgage Hall, Church Lane, Ledbury will be formally opened by the Mayor of Ledbury at the preview evening - 7pm on Friday 12 September.

I look forward to the usual range of good quality paintings and hope for even more entries than last year. My own pictures are not as consistent as I'd like but I'm going to risk public scrutiny and put in at least four. I've always found other art society members to be very encouraging and it's good if our exhibition also reflects the differing abilities of the membership. So don't be shy - get your entry form to me by 1st September!

September 1st is also the day for our first demonstration of the Autumn/Winter programme when Tim Nash will be painting a landscape in mixed media.

Poster competition winner

Congratulations to Sarah Amery whose picture of the Malvern Hills was judged the most suitable for use on the poster to advertise the Annual Exhibition which, this year, is on 12 and 13 September in the Burgage Hall. Sarah has deliberately echoed the style of the railway posters of the 1930's and when the poster is produced it will have a type face that is also reminiscent of those posters.
