Daph Willett has been very creative during lockdown and Brian Griffith's classes have encouraged her to experiment. Three of her paintings are featured here. The first, Where you want to be but can't get yet, predates the scenes of overcrowded beaches that we saw on the news last week.
In the next she shows how close up get dramatic impact and the third image plays with paint and gesso and is an experiment mixing watercolour and gesso to get rock effects.

Holidays remembered
On the way to a holiday in Scotland Richard Hyde stopped overnight in a B&B in the Lake District. It was almost dark when he photographed the view of the distant mountains and the 'unreal' colour of the sky. The photo re-awoke memories of that magical moment and was the inspiration for this pastel painting.
Lake District Sunset |
The second painting takes us into Scotland and shows the Solway Firth. Despite a heavy grey overcast all the light was in the sky and sea with the land appearing in silhouette.

Rescued
When a painting doesn't work out as planned it may still be possible to make something of it.
Sue Embrey wasn't happy with this one

Sue describes what she did: "I brushed off the lower half of blues then sprayed with a little water and brushed in. I added an under colour before adding the wild daffodils. I used a little fixative in the process." Here's the result

Family Portrait
"I started this portrait just before lockdown and have completed it with help from photos. I am not entirely satisfied with it, but it is better than Mk 1. Perhaps I will go on to produce Mk 3! It is painted with water-based oils." Diana Woods-Humphery

Daedalus and Icarus
This is Bill Sayer's latest acrylic on canvas board "Daedalus and Icarus".
Bill has also written about the myth and how he started painting.
"For those not familiar with the story, Daedalus the inventor had to flee and provided himself and his son Icarus with a set of wings. Icarus was warned not to fly too near the sun, but the impetuous youth flew too high, the wax holding his wings together melted, and he fell to his doom. I wanted to show the desperate father just failing to catch his falling son. In the absence of suitable models falling from the skies of Ledbury I had a lot of fun making these up with the help of various figure drawing references to get the anatomy right. I started with a large watercolour sketch to get things in the right place and then committed myself to canvas.
